I think that if nothing else, this case should be a lesson to each and every one of us. Put together a living will. When it comes down to it, without a legal document your wishes will not be heard when you cannot speak them yourself. This may just be a piece of paper...but it is a priceless piece of paper. I am only 28 and I have one, who knows what can happen.
As for Terry Shiavo, well I feel for all involved. On one hand, who would want to live like that? On the other hand, who can say what she really wants? We have all heard so many contrandictory things about this, that it is hard to believe any one person. And, unfortunately, Terry cannot speak for herself. I pray for all the people on both sides of this issue. Either way it goes, someone is going to suffer; and the worst part is that it will probably be Terry who does the most suffering.

I believe that Terry Shiavo’s husbands ultimate motive is greed. Even though her parents are willing to take care of her he would have to divorce her. He doesn’t want to divorce her because divorced wives have statutory rights. Even if they are vegetables. She would be entitled to a portion of that million dollars he won in a law suite. IT”S JUST ANOTHER CASE OF MURDER FOR GREED!

I believe that Terry’s parents should have the right to take care of their daughter.

Here’s where I may differ from allot of people on the board. If her parents thought she would be better off dead than I wouldn’t have a problem with them allowing her to die. Just so long as no other family member would be willing to take care of her. Although it is a bit cruel to starve someone to death even if they can’t feel pain. But let’s face it folks, her life was over when she went brain dead. sad

Onlymerk,

The point is SHE CAN FEEL PAIN. There was a quote from one of the nurses that take care of her, which stated, "should we stop taking care of alzeheimer patients, or people with strokes etc.." Her point being is just because she is in a vegetative state doesn't mean she can't feel pain or shouldn't have the right to live. You can see it in clips of video's they have showed that she does show expression, she's not on a life support for goodness sake, she had a feeding tube, which I say to put it back in.

I can agree with that Onlymerk........If another family member is willing to take care of her then so be it. Personally, if it were me in the vegetative state I would be pissed if that happened and I was laying there like that with no quality of life. Since there was no living will that is the chance you take.

Klek,

I understand how you feel and I respect your opinion. It’s such a delicate situation. It's hard to know what is best for her. huh

Schiavo death would be 'peaceful,' experts say
Removal of feeding tube would end her life in about three weeksThe Associated Press
Updated: 11:46 a.m. ET March 22, 2005NEW YORK - If Terri Schiavo dies from the removal of her feeding tube, her passing should be peaceful, experts say.

After all, she is in a persistent vegetative state without conscious awareness, they noted.

But studies show that even patients who can speak and who have chosen to stop eating and drinking generally don’t complain of thirst or hunger, said Dr. Russell Portenoy, chair of palliative care at the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York.

“It’s as if the body has a protective mechanism at the end of life, such that loss of appetite and loss of thirst precede the dying process,” he said.

Death can take a widely variable amount of time but generally arrives within three weeks, Portenoy said.

Schiavo recovery impossible, experts say
Opinion: The time has come to let Terri Schiavo die

Schiavo’s feeding tube was removed on Friday. It has been removed twice before and then re-inserted because of legal pressure, but Portenoy and Yale expert Dr. Sherwin Nuland said those interruptions in feeding should not have caused harm.

Generally, death from prolonged lack of food and water is due to dehydration, said Nuland, author of the book, “How We Die.”

Dehydration leads to kidney failure. When the kidneys shut down, levels of certain substances in the blood rise. The person slips into a coma. At some point the biochemical changes in the blood become severe enough to impair the electrical system that controls the functioning of the heart, and the heart stops beating.

“It’s usually quite a peaceful death,” Portenoy said. “The person generally looks as if he or she is drifting off to sleep, and then dies.”.

Seeing Terry Shiavo's Mother cry breaks my heart. Why would anybody want to do that to somebody's parents? What difference does it make if she is alive as long as her parents want to take care of her?

Her Husband is a mean, greedy, son of a bitch!

I've changed my stance based on the web site link. The husband should just divorce her. Be done..easy solution.

Nobody should make a decision or really even have an opinion until they have spent time with Terry and her parents in Terry's hospital room.

I think that Terri is probably in some kind of pain with bed soares and probably her muscles because of her lack of movement. But allowing her to starve to death is inhumane.. It's one thing to take a person with permanent brain damage off life support and let them go. But it's another to have someone starve to death. I wouldn't want to see anyone I love starve to death and deteriorate right in front of my eyes. I know how sick it makes you feel when you don't get a chance to eat for awhile and it's weakening. I absoultley think what he is doing is wrong.

I'm afraid now it is just Michael being stubborn and seeing if he can win. I don't think he seems like someone who likes to lose.

I found a transcript from the Larry King Show the other night. He doesn't even know if she ever made the comment about not wanting to live in this state.

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0503/18/lkl.01.html

M. SCHIAVO: I won't give it up. TEXT I'm going to carry out her wishes to the very end. This is what she wanted. It's not about the Schindlers, it's not about me, not about Congress, it's about Terri.

Now, I want you all to think about going through a judicial process to have your wishes granted and then the Congress and the government walking in on that because of their personal views. That's absurd!

Governor Bush, he's only doing this for votes. And I urge everybody out there, call your Congress, call your House legislators, call your House representatives in Washington and tell them to stay out of our personal business. They're going to be running everybody's life.

KING: Michael, what do you expect to happen? Congress is in recess now, they have to come back into special session. The Supreme Court could put a stay on it. What do you think is going to happen?

M. SCHIAVO: I don't think the Supreme Court is going to put a stay on it. And I hope and implore that everybody call their legislators. They have to stay out of people's personal lives. There's no place for government. Call them and tell them.

KING: Have you had any contact with the family today? This is a sad day all the way around, Michael. We know of your dispute.

M. SCHIAVO: I've had no contact with them.

KING: No contact at all?

M. SCHIAVO: No.

KING: Do you understand how they feel?

M. SCHIAVO: Yes, I do. But this is not about them,TEXT

the reality of death by starvation is that it is painful and it causes electrolyte imbalance that can lead to seizures and the lack of hydration can cause lips to crack and bleed as well as the tongue to dry out and crack causing painful sores.

http://clarionherald.org/20050309/edtorial.htm

MYTH - Death by starvation and dehydration is painless.

REALITY - In Wesley J. Smith's book, "Forced Exit," St. Louis neurologist William Burke said: "An unconscious person would feel it (dehydration) just as you or I would. They will go into seizures. Their skin cracks, their tongue cracks, their lips crack. They may have nosebleeds because of the drying of their mucous membranes, and heaving and vomiting might ensue because of the drying out of the stomach lining. They will feel the pangs of hunger and thirst. Imagine going one day without a glass of water. Death by dehydration takes 10 to 14 days. It is an extremely agonizing death."

One of Terry's nurses said that Terry used to eat Jello and she liked it. She also sucked apple juice and ice cubes out of a washcloth.

If you feel that Terri should not be allowed to die of starvation, please go to this website, click on the action tab and then go to the online petition. Your name counts if you want to stop this woman from passing.
