In the early morning hours of October 5, 2004 the relatives of Claudia Perez awoke to find Claudia missing. She had left a letter thanking her grandpa for taking care of her and stated that she loved him. It is believed that Claudia left on her own accord, but her family fears something may have gone wrong. They've asked for a website to help circulate Claudia's case. Please take a moment to look it over and pass it along to your friends and family. At this time, there are two known teens by the name of Claudia Perez missing. This young lady is from Wildwood, Florida. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated. Claudia's website contains fliers and other materials to aid in this ongoing search. Please download all you can and use them. If you have a website, if you have room, please link to Claudia.

xx Claudia Perez on CTV

Fourteen-year-old Claudia Perez lived in Wildwood Florida with her mother, Rosemary Burgos, and grandfather, Joaquin Burgos. Claudia was a student at Wildwood Middle School. On the evening of October 5, 2004, Claudia went to bed. Later that night, her mother heard a couple of knocks on their apartment door. Rosemary checked each time and found nobody there. She, too, eventually went to bed.

Sometime near 6 a.m. Rosemary got up to and went to check on her daughter. She found her bedroom empty and searched the apartment. Claudia was gone. Rosemary immediately called the local police. Investigators quickly responded to the panicked mother's call. They discovered Claudia's clothes were gone a note left behind by the missing child. It was for her grandfather and boyfriend, but it did not disclose where she was going. "I just wish she would try to get ahold of me somehow and let me know that she is okay," said the concerned grandfather. Joaquin was very close to his granddaughter. Unfortunately, Joaquin was in a nursing home when she disappeared.

Authorities believe Claudia left home around 4:30 that morning. Lieutenant Bobby Caruthers of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office questioned Claudia's boyfriend. The youth did not shed any light on the case. "We have been to her boyfriend's house several times and a niece might have information on her whereabouts but is denying having any knowledge," said Caruthers. Investigators initially believed Claudia was a runaway.

As the days turned into weeks, law enforcement authorities continued to search for the missing girl. The search went from door-to-door. Fliers and posters were then circulated state-wide and anyone who knew Claudia was questioned. Pleas were also made on local television and in newspapers for the public's help. Several reports of seeing the missing child were followed, but only led to dead ends. "Any information that would help us locate Claudia, we ask that they call Sumter County Sheriff's Office," said Caruthers. "We do want to find her and at least make sure she is safe and reunite her with her grandfather."

It has almost been a year since Claudia Perez has been missing. She is now fifteen-years-old. Law enforcement authorities are still searching for her and consider her to be missing and endangered. Claudia may still be in the local area, or may have traveled to Illinois or Texas. Anyone with information on this case and/or the whereabouts of this missing child is urged to immediately contact the Sumter County Sheriff's Office (352-793-2621).

xx Missing 15 months, teen runaway returns home

WILDWOOD — For the past 15 months Joaquin Burgos has been beside himself with worry and fear, wondering if his granddaughter was even alive.

On Saturday night, Burgos’ prayers were answered when his 15-year-old granddaughter, Claudia Perez, came home. Perez ran away from home on Oct. 5, 2004 without telling her grandfather where she was headed and since that day her grandfather has searched the state wondering what happened.

“I was in total shock, really,” Burgos said about his granddaughter’s return.

Perez said she had been staying in Miami with two friends wwhile she was gone. Her friends, one female and one male, own a home in Miami, according to Perez.
“I didn’t do anything while I was there,” she said.

Family problems drove Perez to run away from Wildwood and the home she had always known, she said. She said she knew her grandfather was looking for her but she did not want to call home because she was afraid she would get caught.

“I wish I would have called and let him know where I was,” she said. “I tried to call a few times.”

Perez said she came back to Wildwood because she missed her family. She said it was not worth leaving and she would not do it again.

“Being away from the family was the hardest part,” she said.

Although she missed her family, she was afraid to return home, she said. Her family is now trying to resolve the issues that drove Perez more than 300 miles away, and the soon-to-be 16-year-old hopes to get back in school.

Burgos said he had no clue she was coming home and it was a total surprise.

“I was sitting in my chair and heard my daughter scream ... turned around and there she was,” he said. “Unbelievable.”

Burgos said he was so shocked and in such disbelief that he had to have his family pinch him to make sure it was not a dream. Cousin Tiffany Chancey said she was very worried while the family looked for Perez and she is glad she is home. While Perez was missing, Chancey wore a button with her picture on it in hopes that someone would recognize her.

Burgos said he is thankful to Kelly from Project Jason and Janet from Eyes of America for their help with his search.

“I regret that I left home,” Perez said. “You should think before you do something.”
