« Thread started on: Dec 9th, 2004, 11:04am »

PADUCAH - The search for a 10-month-old girl who was swept away when her parents' vehicle stalled in flooded Massac Creek continued Wednesday evening.

Sheriff's deputies, volunteers and family members still had not found Katie Michelle Gray, The Paducah Sun reported.

Crews on horseback and in boats were used in Tuesday's search for the infant, Chief Deputy Sheriff Terry Long said.

A diaper bag and bottle were found alongside the creek, WPSD-TV reported.

Johnnie and Sandy Gray were traveling on a gravel road about three miles west of Paducah late Monday night, Long said. Johnnie Gray told deputies their sport-utility vehicle stalled as he crossed the creek and about three-quarters of it went under water.

"The water was so swift it took my feet out from under me, and we went down in the water," Gray told WPSD.

The couple tried to get out of the vehicle. Sandy Gray was swept away by the current with the baby in a car seat, the station reported.

Johnnie Gray retrieved the car seat with his daughter in it.

"I grabbed her back once, but I went down again, and all I could see was the handle," he said.

Deputies said that he attempted to go to the creek bank with the child but lost his footing and fell into the water and that the baby and car seat were lost.

Searchers still seeking baby girl lost in creek

The search for a 10-month-old girl who was swept away in flooded Massac Creek continued yesterday.

But as of early evening, McCracken County sheriff's deputies, volunteers and family members had not found Katie Michelle Gray, authorities said.

Crews on horseback and in boats have searched since Tuesday, Chief Deputy Sheriff Terry Long said. A diaper bag and bottle belonging to the baby were found alongside the creek.

Johnnie and Sandy Gray were traveling with Katie in a sport utility vehicle on a gravel road off Mayfield-Metropolis Road about three miles west of Paducah late Monday night, Long said. Johnnie Gray told deputies the SUV stalled as he crossed the creek and about three-quarters of it went under water.

"The water was so swift it took my feet out from under me, and we went down in the water," Johnnie Gray said.

Deputies said Gray told them he attempted to get to the bank with the child in the car seat. But he lost his footing and fell into the water, and the baby was lost.

xx Father Takes Polygraph

Paducah (AP) The father of a 10-month-old missing since Monday in flooded Massac Creek took a polygraph test.

Johnnie Gray claimed he lost his grip of his daughter's car seat the creek.

Gray says he voluntarily took the test to prove his innocence in the disappearance of Katie Michelle Gray.

McCracken County Sheriff Frank Augustus confirmed that Gray took the test but would not discuss the results.

Crews were working to build a makeshift earthen dam and pump water out of the creek. That came after two cadaver dogs indicated a body may be in an area just downstream from where the incident happened.

Gray says his daughter was accidentally dropped into the rushing water Monday night, when he and his wife, Sandy, abandoned a sport utility vehicle after it stalled in the creek.

Gray has told police that the strong current knocked him into the water, where he lost grip of the car seat.

The search for a 10-month-old girl missing since Monday is no longer focused on the creek where her parents reported her disappearance.

McCracken County Sheriff Frank Augustus says his department spent yesterday following up on other leads in the search for Katie Michelle Gray, but would not elaborate.

Augustus pulled divers from Massac Creek yesterday.

McCracken County Emergency Management Director Kent King says that since Katie is presumed to be a drowning victim, Thursday and Friday were the most likely days that her body would have floated.

The infant's parents, Johnnie and Sandy Gray, say they tried to cross the creek in a sport utility vehicle during flooding Monday night.

Johnnie Gray has said that he accidentally let go of Katie in the water while he and his wife tried to get her to shore after the SUV stalled and started flooding.

He said the water took his feet out from under him and he lost his grip on Katie's child seat.

xx Finding Body Key to Katie Gray Answers
« Reply #4 on: Dec 9th, 2004, 11:12am »

Thursday will be Day 9 in the investigation of what happened to the Lone Oak infant missing and presumed to be dead, although the McCracken County Sheriff's Department continues to call it a missing person case.

Dogs specially trained to find bodies, boats and four-wheelers could be seen combing the banks of Massac Creek.

Sources say investigators have little evidence and prosecutors are moving slowly, fearful they might charge the parents with a lesser offense like Reckless Negligence and they be precluded from increasing the charges if,ultimately the parents are found to have a larger role in the case then they have suggested to police.

The family has told NewsChannel 6 that they have hired a lawyer. The couple has made no public statements for two days now.

Background

In an exclusive interview with NewsChannel 6 on Monday, a couple that knew Johnny and Sandy Gray say the couple showed up at their doorstep the night their daughter, Katie, was lost in a rain-swollen Massac Creek acting suspiciously.

The couple, who only agreed to an interview if their identities could be protected, say they told their story to authorities. McCracken County Sheriff Frank Augustus would not confirm that his investigators had talked to the couple. What follows is a summary of what the couple told NewsChannel 6's Anna Prendergast:

Earlier today when asked about suggestions his daughter's disappearance is anything other than an accident, Johnny Gray responded," Accusations are upseting..People express their opinions in different ways. I dont care.. I know what happened".

But a couple that lives near Massac Creek, and claims to be friends of the Grays, says the story the public is hearing is not the entire story, "There was too much of a time lapse from when they got to our house and the time the baby supposedly dissapeared".

In his report to police and in interviews with NewsChannel 6, Johnny Gray said his Blazer (actually a vehicle he was working on for a former employer) in Massac Creek near Mayfield-Metropolis Road around 10pm November 29th.

Gray's story is that his wife dropped the infant, still strapped in her car seat, and that he grabbed the seat from the water. Gray says he then lost his footing and let go of the car seat.

He says he then walked down this road for about a 12/2 mile before stopping at a friend's house for help.

The couple that has come forward says they were those friends, but that Gray and his wife claimed their car had broken down and they needed a ride home.

"I asked them where Katie is they said she's at the babysitters".

Later, the Gray's returned to the house with a different story, said one witness, "the second time they came back they said we got to tell you the truth. Katie is down there in the creek".

That was about 1AM. The 911 call came into police at 1:08AM.

That's when, according to our source, Sandy Gray, sobbing, said,

"She said I killed my baby....I killed my baby...I know i killed my baby!"

Among other developments Monday:

For the first time.. No search of the creek for the infant. Investigators say they are taking re-evaluating the search. Part of the problem is that days of heavy rain are again causing the Massac Creek to rise.

xx Search for Baby Suspended

The search for a missing Paducah baby will have to wait until the water recedes.

Officials have suspended their search for 10-month-old Katie Gray because of high water in the creek where her parents say they lost her. Searchers will wait for at least two weeks.

They have searched a five-mile stretch of Massac Creek since November 30th. Recent heavy rains have slowed the efforts. McCracken Sheriff Frank Augustus says the creek level raised more than five inches in some areas yesterday.

xx Mother of missing baby arrested on drunken-driving
« Reply #8 on: Dec 13th, 2004, 1:18pm »

PADUCAH, Ky. - The mother of a missing 10-month-old baby was being held in jail after her arrest on a drunken-driving charge.

Sandy Gray, 33, was arrested early Sunday after her vehicle ran off the road and hit a stop sign, city police said.

Gray failed field sobriety tests and was charged with a third offense of driving under the influence and not having insurance, police said.

She was being held Monday in the McCracken County Regional Jail on a $2,500 cash bond for the DUI charge and $100 cash for the no-insurance charge.

Gray's baby, Katie Gray, has been missing since Nov. 29 when the sport utility vehicle carrying the infant and her parents stalled in rising water from Massac Creek and they abandoned the vehicle.

The baby's father, Johnnie Gray, has said he accidentally let go of his daughter in the water. The search for the infant remains suspended because of high water

xx Kentucky: Search for Baby Katie to Resume
« Reply #9 on: Feb 16th, 2005, 07:07am »

The search for baby Katie Gray may begin again soon -- as early as this weekend.

Gray, missing and presumed drowned since november 29th.

Her parents say the SUV they were driving stalled in Massac Creek west of Paducah, and she was swept away in flood waters.

The search has been off until the water level drops.

McCracken County Coroner Dan Sims says conditions are getting better for a search -- Sims also says not a day goes by that he doesn't think about Katie Gray. "She doesn't deserve to be out there, even though we know it's just a shell that's there. She doesn't deserve it. She deserves proper burial, and not to be in a creek bed"

Katie Gray was 10 months old when she disappeared

xx Baby Katie Gray Update

Anna Prendergast

It's been three months since ten month old Katie Gray disappeared.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department searched Massac Creek over the weekend, but there was no sign of the missing baby.

Katie's father, Johnnie Gray was also at Massac Creek this weekend to help with the search. Johnnie was there to help search crews better understand what happened the night she disappeared.

Dan Simms, the McCracken County Coroner says the search for Katie will not continue on a regular basis. Instead a scaled sown version of the search will take place periodically.

Katie's mother, Sandy Gray is sitting in Ballard county jail tonight on her second driving under the influence charge.

Tom Emory, the lead investigator on the case says Sandy Gray told him she is pregnant with her second child.

Katie gray disappeared November 29th when her parents SUV stalled in the middle of the Massac Creek. Johnnie Gray said Katie slipped out of hands and was swept away by flood waters

xx KY: Katie Gray Case Headed to Grand Jury
« Reply #11 on: Oct 25th, 2005, 05:29am »

By Anna Prendergast

Monday, October 24, 2005

Subpeonas were served on two key investigators in the disappearance of Katie Gray in Massac Creek on Novermber 30, 2004.

VIEW VIDEO NOW

Sources tell NewsChannel 6 the Lead Investigator, McCracken County Detective Tom Emery and County Coroner Dan Sims were served with Grand Jury subpeonas on Monday. Commonwealth Attorney Tim Kaltenbach has been reviewing materials from the case for several weeks now.

Katie Gray disappeared 11 months ago. The 10-month-old's parents say she was swept away after their SUV stalled in a rain swollen Massac Creek just west of Paducah. Numerous searches in and along the creek have turned up nothing.

In May, 2004, crews built two levees to hold back the water. They used water pumps to reroute water away from the area where Katie's parents say they dropped her. McCracken County Coroner, Dan Sims, "The first searches there's always been a lot of water in there and we couldn't see the bottom. So, it's not to say we weren't missing something."

xx Parents charged in daughter's disappearance return
« Reply #12 on: Nov 9th, 2005, 6:43pm »

PADUCAH, Ky. - The parents of a baby missing for nearly a year were arrested in Tennessee and returned to Kentucky to face manslaughter charges.

Johnnie and Sandy Gray were taken into custody in Waynesboro, Tenn., by McCracken County sheriff's deputies on Wednesday. The couple waived extradition and were being held in the McCracken County Regional Jail.

Last Friday, a McCracken County grand jury indicted the couple on charges of second-degree manslaughter and tampering with physical evidence. They also face numerous misdemeanor charges.

The Grays have said they lost their 10-month-old daughter, Katie, last Nov. 29 when Johnnie Gray could not hang on to the child's baby seat as it was removed from a car that stalled in a flooded creek. Investigators have not found Katie's body or a car seat after searching the creek and the wooded area near the Grays' former apartment near Lone Oak.

According to the manslaughter indictment, the Grays either "wantonly caused the death of Katie Gray or wantonly failed to make a proper effort to prevent the death" of their daughter.

If convicted, the 38-year-old Johnnie Gray could face five to 10 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and one to five years on the tampering charge.

Sandy Gray, 34, also is charged with being a persistent felony offender. As a result, she could face 10 to 20 years on the manslaughter charge if convicted, said Chris Hollowell, an assistant commonwealth's attorney in McCracken County. She was convicted in 2000 on a methamphetamine charge and was given an 18-month sentence that was probated for two years.

The Grays are scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 16. Johnnie Gray is being held on a $15,000 bond, and his wife's bond is $14,000, according to a jail official.

The Grays had moved to Tennessee, where he is originally from, sometime after their daughter's disappearance, Hollowell said.

McCracken County sheriff's Detective Tom Emery said the Grays left a 2-week-old daughter with relatives, but the infant was placed in foster care by Tennessee social services on Wednesday.

xx Couple Pleads Guilty To Reckless Homicide In Baby'

PADUCAH, Ky.) -- A couple pleaded guilty to reckless homicide on Friday in the disappearance of their infant daughter more than a year ago.

Johnnie and Sandy Gray entered the guilty pleas in McCracken County Circuit Court in exchange for five-year prison sentences.

They were indicted in November on charges of second-degree manslaughter, which carries up to 10 years in prison.

Their 10-month-old daughter, Katie Gray, has never been found after the couple reported her missing in a flooded creek 17 months ago.

The Grays had told investigators that Katie was swept down Massac Creek on Nov. 29, 2004. Johnnie Gray told investigators he lost his grip on Katie's car seat while removing her from a vehicle that had stalled in the creek.

The couple also pleaded guilty Friday to tampering with physical evidence, possession of marijuana and leaving the scene of an accident. Johnny Gray also pleaded guilty to driving on a suspended license.

The plea agreement calls for all the charges to run concurrently for a total of five years.

The couple's sentencing was set for Aug. 3.
