16TH ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT WALK -- Hard to believe it's been 16 years since young Ilene Misheloff was abducted. Since that time, her parents and many supporters have worked to remind people about Ilene as they work to ensure that other children do not suffer the same fate.

Mark your calendars for Monday, Jan. 31, for the annual candlelight walk and ecumenical prayer service. It begins at 7 p.m. at Wells Middle School, 6800 Penn Drive, and ends at St. Raymond's Church. 11555 Shannon Ave.

xx Family holds 16th vigil for missing daughter
« Reply #2 on: Jan 29th, 2005, 2:30pm »

Ilene Misheloff left Wells Middle School in Dublin on Jan. 30, 1989, at the end of the school day. The 13-year-old, dressed in a charcoal gray pullover polo sweater and horizontally striped pink-and-gray skirt, was supposed to then go to the Dublin Iceland rink for her lesson that afternoon.

She never made it to the rink.

Sixteen years later, her family still doesn't know where she is, who took her or why. But they haven't given up on finding her.

The family will be hosting its 16th candlelight vigil Monday. They keep doing the annual vigils on or near the anniversary of Ilene's disappearance to remind the public their daughter has not yet returned home, said Ilene's mother, Maddi Misheloff.

"It lets people know that we are still looking for her," she said.

Her parents and two other volunteers still operate the Ilene Misheloff Recovery Effort out of an office on Village Parkway. Every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. they send out fliers with information about Ilene and computer age-enhanced picture to law enforcement and fire departments throughout the United States and Canada. Last week they sent out 500 envelopes.

The hope is that since these agencies deal with the public, someone somewhere might have seen her or know where she is, Misheloff said.

Ilene Misheloff was 5 feet 3 inches tall and 115 pounds at the time of her disappearance. She had brown hair and brown eyes and had braces on her teeth.

The Misheloff family asks anyone with information about their daughter's disappearance to call the Dublin Police department at 925-833-6670 or 800-635-6306, or the FBI at 415-553-7400

xx Missing girl haunts Dublin

DUBLIN It's been 16 years since Ilene Misheloff vanished after school while she walked across town to ice-skating practice. More than a decade later, Ilene's family holds out hope for her safe return.
"We can't give up on our child," said Maddi Mishelhoff, Ilene's mother. "Every day you put your feet on the floor and say this is the day she's coming home."

On Monday night, friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil walk to commemorate the grim anniversary of 13-year-old Ilene's disappearance Jan. 30, 1989. The walk began at Wells Middle School, the school Ilene attended at the time.

"We do this to make sure everybody knows we're still looking for her," Maddi Misheloff said. "If things ever get too much for me, I just stop and think about what it's like for her."

Roughly 70 people showed up for the walk. Many carried glow sticks and signs that read "Help Bring Ilene Home."

Mike Misheloff, Ilene's father, said the annual walk's turnout never fails to surprise him.

"Every year I'm worried that people won't show up," he said. "And every year they do. When it's rained, people have come out to show their support."

It's that support, Misheloff said, from which the family draws its collective strength.

"We're strengthened by the fact that people do remember," he said.

For the past two years, Dublin police Detective Michael Toms has been in charge of the investigation.

"The information I have to work with is 16 years old," he said. "When new information comes in, I have to fit it into the investigation as it was 16 years ago."

Dublin police still receive four to six new leads a year, Toms said. But there's been nothing that has yet pointed investigators to one specific person.

"We don't have a No. 1 suspect we're looking in all directions," Toms said. "But we do hope to receive that one piece of information."

Walking with the procession was Pleasanton resident D.C. Martin, who attended Wells with Ilene and her twin brother, Brian, with whom he's still friends.

"I know how much this means to Brian and his family," Martin said. "I think it's important that we all put the effort into helping bring Ilene home. It's important for the family to know that the community is there for them."

Ronda Slack of Dublin is a crossing guard near the Misheloff home. She said she was prompted to join the walk because of her admiration for the family.

"They've stayed very positive people," Slack said. "I really admire the way they deal with their situation."

Maddi Misheloff said certain days can be "torturous."

"You take everything you can with what little joy comes into your life," she said. "You use that to get you through all the rough patches."

The walk concluded at St. Raymond's Catholic Church on Shannon Avenue, where a prayer service was held.

Anyone with information regarding the disappearance of Ilene Misheloff is asked to contact the Dublin Police Department at (925) 833-6673.

DUBLIN - The parents of Ilene Misheloff will mark the 17th year in the enduring search for their missing daughter with a candlelight vigil and walk tonight in Dublin.
Ilene's parents, Mike and Maddi Misheloff, have held the vigil every year since their daughter went missing Jan. 30 1989.

A $95,000 reward stands for information leading to her recovery.

Police have released a photo of what Ilene, 30, would look like now.

"The Dublin police have been wonderful in keeping Ilene's case open," said Maddi Misheloff. "They still get four or five calls a year."

Community members,

family, friends and strangers from around the country attend the walk, which ends with a prayer service catering to all faiths.
Dublin police ask anyone with information to call (925) 833-6670.

The 7 p.m. walk will start at Well's Middle School at 6800 Penn Drive and will proceed to Saint Raymond's Church at 11555 Shannon Ave.

xx Hope lives for girl lost since '89

By Sophia Kazmi, MEDIANEWS STAFF

DUBLIN A candlelight vigil and prayer service for Ilene Misheloff, kidnapped from the streets of Dublin 18 years ago, will be held Tuesday evening.
Since her disappearance on Jan. 30, 1989, her family, friends and residents have gathered each year on the anniversary to remind the public that Ilene still is missing.

Ilene, 13, was last seen leaving Wells Middle School. She was heading to an ice skating lesson at Dublin Iceland and has not been heard from since.

The Misheloffs haven't given up on finding their daughter. They publicize Ilene's case year-round. From an office on Village Parkway, the family runs the Ilene Misheloff Recovery Effort. They send out hundreds of fliers each week about Ilene, the facts of her disappearance and a computer enhanced picture of what she may look like as an adult.

Ilene Misheloff was 5 feet, 3inches tall and weighed 115pounds at the time of her disappearance. She has brown eyes, wore her brown hair shoulder length and had braces on her teeth. The day she disappeared she was wearing a charcoal gray pullover polo sweater, a horizontally striped pink and gray skirt, black low-top Keds and carried a dark blue back pack.

The memorial walk will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Middle School, 6800 Penn Drive, and will proceed to Saint Raymond Church, 11555 Shannon Ave.

The Misheloffs ask anyone with information about Ilene's disappearance to call Dublin police at (925) 833-6670 or 800-635-6306, or the FBI

at (415) 553-7400.
