REDWOOD CITY -- Police say they had more than enough reason to suspect Scott Peterson was involved in his pregnant wife's disappearance, and that her body lay somewhere in San Francisco Bay.

Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan ticked off the list of "about 41 reasons" in rapid succession Tuesday, providing jurors with the first detailed narrative of the double-murder case against Peterson in the 17-week trial.

xx Expert- Fetus Likely Died on 12-23-02

REDWOOD CITY – The fetus Laci Peterson was carrying likely died around Dec. 23, 2002, a day before the pregnant schoolteacher was reported missing, an expert in fetal medicine testified for the prosecution Wednesday at Scott Peterson's double murder trial.

Dr. Greggory DeVore, who said he was asked by prosecutors to examine Laci Peterson's medical records and bones taken from the fetus to help determine when it died, noted the Dec. 23 death date was an average estimated from several different examinations.

The age of the fetus is important because prosecutors claim it was expelled dead from Laci Peterson's decaying corpse. Defense lawyers maintain it was born alive, proving Scott Peterson couldn't be the killer given its due date of Feb. 10, nearly seven weeks after Laci Peterson vanished.

A Stockton couple is trying to rally volunteers to search San Francisco Bay this weekend in a “last-ditch effort” to find evidence in the Scott Peterson double-murder case.
Meanwhile, a local attorney said a search by the public could hurt the case more than help, and it’s not likely those involved could do a better job of searching than police.

Kimberly and Joshua Collier of Stockton asked volunteers to meet at the Berkeley Marina this morning to search for the “missing anchors” or any other evidence that might reveal the truth about the death of Laci Peterson and her unborn son, Conner

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. Scott Peterson's defense team will resume its cross-examination of a Modesto police detective in the Peterson trial this morning.

Detective Craig Grogan spent most of last week providing a long list of reasons why investigators suspected Scott Peterson in the disappearance of his wife.

When defense attorney Mark Geragos resumes his cross-examination of the detective today, it's expected he will try to prove that police focused on Peterson too quickly.

xx -Monday Trial Update 9-27-04

REDWOOD CITY -- The lead detective assigned to investigate Laci Peterson's disappearance backed up a key defense theory Monday that the pregnant schoolteacher had planned to walk the couple's dog the morning she vanished.

Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan has spent a week recounting why authorities maintain Scott Peterson is the only person who could have killed his wife.

Defense attorneys began their cross-examination Thursday and continued Monday. They are attempting to show police focussed to hastily on Peterson.

Prosecutors allege Peterson killed Laci on or around Dec. 24, 2002, in their Modesto home, then dumped her weighted body into San Francisco Bay. Her remains - and that of her fetus - washed up in April 2003, not far from where Peterson launched his boat that Christmas Eve morning for what he claims was a solo fishing trip.

Wardrobe wars: The issue of what clothes Laci Peterson was wearing when she died came up again Monday.

Police theorize that Scott Peterson killed his wife Dec. 23, 2002, the night before he reported her missing. To prove that point, prosecutors have tried to show that the pants found on Laci Peterson's body when it washed ashore four months later were the cream-colored pants her sister recalls her wearing the evening of Dec. 23.

Defense says investigation was botched

REDWOOD CITY - Scott Peterson's lawyers persisted yesterday in trying to show that police narrowly focused on their client while ignoring other possible leads in the murder case.
Defense lawyer Mark Geragos spent his fourth day cross-examining Modesto police Detective Craig Grogan and pointing out how police failed to follow up on a number of reported sightings of Laci Peterson the day she vanished.

Geragos on Tuesday mentioned four calls to the police tip hot line within days of Laci's disappearance - one from a man who said he saw a woman who looked like Laci "being forced into a van, correct?" Geragos asked the detective.

"Yes," Grogan replied.

Geragos returned to the same line of questioning yesterday regarding the tipster.

"He commented specifically that there was that look on her face, remember? How did he describe her look?" Geragos asked. "A scared look on the face?"
