A Lumpkin County man who reported his wife missing 11 years ago was charged with her murder Sunday afternoon after authorities dug up skeletal remains they believe are those of the woman.

Until an analysis by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is complete, authorities won't know for certain whether the bones found on federal land on Camel Mountain are those of Villa Inez Dowdy.
But pieces of clothing found with them "would indicate that it was most likely her," said county Sheriff Mark McClure.

Authorities searched the area after an unidentified person told them that Dowdy's body would be found there.

Within hours, Dowdy's husband, Donald Lamar Dowdy, who reported her missing on Sept. 1, 1993, was arrested.

He was in a local hospital Sunday, undergoing treatment for a previous condition.

The husband once had been considered a suspect in the disappearance, McClure said.

Inez Dowdy, better known as "Chubby," was 42 when she went missing from her home about four miles west of Dahlonega. Her husband said he had left the house to run errands that morning. He said he found her gone without a trace when he returned two hours later.

"She is just off the face of the Earth as far as investigators are concerned," GBI spokesman John Bankhead said at the time.

xx Body's discovery gives relatives closure
« Reply #1 on: Feb 8th, 2005, 06:19am »

By RICK LAVENDER
The Times

David Dowdy gave up a secret he had kept for 11 years Sunday: where his missing wife was buried.

Authorities found what they believe are the remains of Villa Inez "Chubby" Dowdy about 4 feet down in woods beyond a small church cemetery eight miles west of Dahlonega.

David Lamar Dowdy, 61 and ill, checked himself out of Chestatee Regional Hospital and led Lumpkin County Sheriff's investigators to the secluded area just after dawn Sunday.

The team dug up the remains after Dowdy was taken back but before cadaver-sniffing dogs had arrived to help, Sheriff Mark McClure. Dowdy was charged with murder Sunday afternoon.

On Monday, McClure would neither confirm nor deny reports that Dowdy has confessed, citing the investigation.

But some family members say he has, a point underscored by the murder charge. The discovery also closes a mystery that shadowed the family and the county for years.

From Gainesville, Texas, Dowdy's niece Tammy Abernathy said, "I've just prayed that God would let him, before he passes away, ... let him reveal where he buried her. So we would have closure."

Abernathy, who moved from Lumpkin in 1998, is among close relatives who long suspected Dowdy killed the 42-year-old woman most knew by her childhood nickname, Chubby.

The couple drank and fought, they said. But Chubby quit drinking years before she disappeared Sept. 1, 1993, Abernathy said. She also was "crazy" about her children, she said, and wouldn't have left them, as Dowdy maintained.

Darlene Ashworth, another niece, said she questioned Dowdy because Chubby left her inhaler, pocketbook and daily journal behind.

Ashworth and her daughter, Marty Turner, who together run two halfway houses for women in the Dahlonega area, notified the Sheriff's Office, put up flyers and a $1,000 reward, and scoured the county looking for the missing woman.

"Every time they found a body," Ashworth said, "it'd be like having my insides turned inside out."

McClure, who worked with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation at the time, said Dowdy was considered a suspect. But no charges were filed.

Other family members saw the mechanic and jack-of-all trades differently.

"I never would have believed it," said his brother, Jewell "Curly" Dowdy, a lifelong Lumpkin resident like David Dowdy. "I never wanted to believe he had anything to do with it."

Jewell Dowdy said his brother wasn't mean or cruel, and had quit drinking before the disappearance. He also described Chubby as "hard to get along with."

Jewell Dowdy's son, John Dowdy, called Sunday's revelation "tragedy and closure."

"We have tragedy in one deal, but closure in the other," said John Dowdy, who is serving as the spokesman for two of David and Chubby Dowdy's three daughters.

Neither has talked to the media. But one, McKala Lingerfelt, was with her father when he was re-entered at Chestatee Regional for the second time in a week Saturday, suffering from diverticulitis, or inflamed pouches in the colon, family said.

His condition is not considered terminal, John Dowdy suggested, countering media reports.

Sometime Saturday, he revealed to family the information about the body. Investigators received word early Sunday. Interviews began at about 3 a.m., McClure said.

Just after sunup, authorities and Dowdy went to the site. It sits in the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest on Camel Mountain, just off Hightower Church Road.

Dowdy pointed out an area. Deputies began digging. They opened three holes: The third included the remains, Turner said. Dowdy and Chubby had lived about five miles away.

The GBI is analyzing the remains and other evidence found in the grave. No motive has been mentioned.

Dowdy may be released from Chestatee Regional today, his brother said. He will go to the Lumpkin Detention Center. A first court appearance will follow.

His family is struggling.

"I'm angry ...," Abernathy said. "But at the same time I wish I could hug (David) and tell him how much I love him."

Marty Turner planned to return to the gravesite today with a video camera, shovel and a plastic bag. She said she'll collect images and dirt and ship them to Chubby's father, Homer Adams.

Adams is 93 and lying seriously ill in a hospital in Gainesville, Texas, north of Dallas near the Oklahoma state line. But he wants to see the evidence before conceding the long search for his daughter is over.

Kids: Dad confessed to slaying
Dahlonega man says he killed his wife in 1993

A Lumpkin County man charged Sunday with killing his wife 11 years ago confessed to the slaying because the knowledge "was making him go crazy and he could no longer hold it inside," according to a statement from his children and grandchildren.

"He said he was very sorry. ... But telling us and the police was his first step to getting everything right with himself and the Lord," said the statement released Tuesday.

The single-page fax from David Dowdy's four children, their spouses and an unlisted number of grandchildren emphasizes that the family still loves and will support Dowdy. But they are "glad" he confessed so their mother and grandmother, Villa Inez "Chubby" Dowdy, can be given a proper burial.

Authorities found what they believe are the 42-year-old woman's skeletal remains buried on federal land west of Dahlonega on Sunday. Dowdy, 61, led them to the area that morning.

Family said he confessed the night before to killing her in September 1993.

The news sparked a flurry of phone calls and resurrected a decade-old investigation that originally had considered the lifelong Lumpkin resident a suspect.

Dowdy was jailed Monday at the Lumpkin Detention Center after being released from Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega. Family said he was being treated for diverticulitis, a colon condition. He is very sick but not near death, as rumored, according to the statement.

Sheriff Mark McClure said Dowdy had a first hearing in Magistrate Court on Monday. Bond won't be set until he goes before a Superior Court judge. A date hasn't been scheduled for that hearing, McClure said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's crime lab is analyzing the remains and other items recovered for positive identification and any insight into the cause of death. McClure expects an answer possibly today on how much information might be available.

McClure had no comment on family members saying Dowdy had confessed.

John Dowdy, a nephew to Dowdy and spokesman for the children, said his uncle also has told why and how he killed his wife. But those details will wait for now, he said.

"That's all they could get out of their hearts last night," John Dowdy said of the statement, the children's first to media.

Dowdy denied for years that he had anything to do with Chubby Dowdy's disappearance the morning of Sept. 1, 1993. He said she ran off. Some family members always doubted him: The couple had a record of domestic trouble. Others, including two daughters then still at home, believed him.

Late Saturday night, ailing and haunted, Dowdy told the truth. Some relatives said McKala Lingerfelt, 11 when her mother disappeared, has been particularly hard-hit.

"This is our time for grieving," the statement says, "and it is hard enough on us already."

Donations are being welcomed to help pay for Chubby Dowdy's funeral. No date has been set, pending the release of her remains.

She'll be buried at Siloam Baptist Church on Siloam Church Road, beside her son Tom, who died in 1991. Chubby, Dowdy, their three daughters and Dowdy's son from a previous marriage attended the church when the children were young, John Dowdy said.

The cemetery is a few miles from where Chubby Dowdy's body was found, in the woods beyond another church graveyard.

The family is praying for David Dowdy, his nephew suggested.

"We don't know that he's saved," John Dowdy said. "He does need to pay for his crime, but he doesn't need to go to Hell for it."

Body is that of missing woman
Remains found in Lumpkin identified as 'Chubby' Dowdy
By RICK LAVENDER
The Times

The family of a Lumpkin County woman missing since 1993 has scheduled her funeral following confirmation Tuesday that remains found a month ago are hers.

The news about Villa Inez "Chubby" Dowdy wasn't a surprise. Her husband, Lumpkin native David Dowdy, led authorities Feb. 6 to where she was buried, in secluded woods west of Dahlonega.

Family members said he confessed to killing her. David Dowdy has been charged with murder.

One of the couple's children, McKala Lingerfelt of Dahlonega, said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation called her at noon Tuesday to tell her the skeletal remains had been positively identified.

"I'm kind of relieved, but then again I'm not," Lingerfelt said. She was 14 when her mother disappeared and was raised believing her father's account, that Chubby, then 42, abandoned them.

Others in the family had been suspicious for years that David Dowdy had a hand in the disappearance.

A GBI spokeswoman could not confirm the identification late Tuesday.

But Lumpkin coroner Larry Banister said Sheriff Mark McClure told him the results. The state crime laboratory in Decatur used dental records for the match, Lingerfelt said.

There was no word on whether further analysis will tell the cause of death. David Dowdy, 61, has said how and why he killed his wife, according to a nephew, but the family has not given details.

Funeral services are set for 4 p.m. April 16 at Siloam Baptist Church on Ga. 52 near Dahlonega. The Dowdys had sometimes attended Siloam. Their son, Tom, killed at age 21 in a wreck in 1991, is buried there. Chubby will be laid beside him.

Deanne Miranda, a niece who lives in Gainesville, Texas, described the identification as a relief, but not closure. "I'm hoping it will be final when we have the funeral," Miranda said.

A hearing for David Dowdy has been postponed, possibly pending identification of the remains. Enotah Judicial Circuit District Attorney Stan Gunter is prosecuting another case, his office said, and could not be reached for comment.

A judge has ordered authorities and potential witnesses not to talk about the Dowdy case.

The family will hold visitation at 1 p.m. April 15 at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega. A fund has been set up to help pay funeral expenses. Donations can be sent to Dowdy Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 71, Dahlonega, GA 30533.

Lingerfelt said she expects the GBI to release her mother's remains later this month

DAHLONEGA - Funeral services will be held Saturday for a Lumpkin County woman whose remains were found earlier this year, eleven years after she disappeared.

The services for Inez "Chubby" Dowdy are scheduled for 4:00 Saturday at Siloam Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Her remains were found in Lumpkin County February 6 after her husband, David Lamar Dowdy, confessed to killing her.

Police then discovered her remains in an undisclosed area of Lumpkin County.

Inez Dowdy had been missing and presumed dead since 1993.

My dad and I visited the Dowdy family tonight @ the funeral home in Dahlonga. It was a very moving thing to walk up to Chubby's casket. Although it was closed, I knew she was in there. I knew that after all these years of her family waiting and wondering what happened to her, the family finally had some sense of closure.

Her funeral will be tomorrow @ 4 p.m. My thought will be with them. I know this will be an emotional day.

This is after the fact, but I will include this for the family of Inez Dowdy

Funeral services for a Lumpkin County woman whose remains were found Feb. 6, after she had been missing since 1993, are set for 4 p.m. Saturday at Siloam Baptist Church near Dahlonega.

The husband of Villa Inez "Chubby" Dowdy is charged with her murder. David Dowdy volunteered Feb. 6 to lead investigators to where the remains were uncovered in woods west of Dahlonega, authorities said.

A warrant for his arrest alleges that the 61-year-old Lumpkin native killed Chubby at their home between 9 and 11 a.m. Sept. 1, 1993, the day she went missing.

The family will receive friends from 1-6 p.m. today at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega.

Chubby will be buried beside her and David's son, Tom. He was killed in a car wreck in 1991.

A Feb. 23 gag order by Chief Superior Court Judge Hugh Stone of the Enotah Judicial Circuit has barred authorities, attorneys and witnesses from talking to the media
