Krystal Dawn Steadman, 9 years old forever.

On the spot where Krystal Steadman's battered and abused body was discovered a cross was placed in her memory. An anonymous individual felt offended by this cross and threatened to sue the state of Nevada for violating the seperation of church and state laws.

A year after a series of heated public hearings in 2004, Nevada has yet to decide how to regulate roadside memorials. The issue came to a head after state highway officials, threatened with a lawsuit, removed an 8-foot, steel cross from U.S. Highway 50 near Carson City.

"It became a huge emotional issue. And here we are, the big bad government, in between," says Scott Magruder, a spokesman for the Nevada Department of Transportation.

The cross marked where 9-year-old Krystal Steadman was discovered in 2000. She was a murder victim, but "literally hundreds" of crosses dot locations of fatal accidents, Magruder says. "They've taken on a life of their own."

I guess this means murder victims must now have a Picasso style pop art memorial to avoid offending anti-Christian bigots! sad

I'm hesitant to post these links about the horrible rape and murder of Krystal.. I fear the book gives too much attention to the murderers, but most news articles about this unspeakable crime are in the archives now.

Where is the government when it comes to the rights of all indivduals including murder victims.

Since when does a TEXT offends the rights of inidividuals who does not believe in God..

The individuals who does not believe in God offends me.

Karen this is out right disgusting that someone would threaten to sue over a victim's memorial. I see things all the time that are offensive to me but I just keep going and don't pay attention to them.

In this great country of the United States, our Constitution has so many loopholes that it works to the benefit of most criminals and not the victims.

I also think that whoever the person was who caused this huge mess over that, is dealt a situation like this in their own family one day. That may seem cruel and ugly but only then will they understand what a cross or plaque means to somebody who has lost a child.

Murdering Krystal isn't enough. Now attempts are being made to erase her memory by destroying her monument.

The majority of such roadside memorials are dedicated to traffic accident victims. The murderers threw Krystal's abused body from their car onto this spot. DNA discovered on Krystal's body linked both suspects to her murder. The older predator was already a registered sex offender.

Krystal's beautiful memorial before it's destruction can be viewed on this link.

Even members of motorcycle clubs were so touched by this memorial that they composed poems for Krystal. It's shocking that a bigot would want her memorial destroyed.

A motorcycle club tried to initially guard Krystal's wooden cross after bigots repeatedly vandalized it.
The wooden cross was replaced with a steel cross and a bigot then filed a lawsuit to have the cross removed.

KRYSTAL'S CROSS TAKEN DOWN

By F.T. Norton, Tribune News Service
November 19, 2003

A memorial, two-ton steel cross for 9-year-old Krystal Steadman, which grew to its large proportions in response to repeated vandalism, was cut from its concrete foundation Tuesday morning and hoisted on to a flatbed truck by Nevada Department of Transportation employees.

"It seems like everyone just wants to keep hurting her," said family friend Jerry Marshall, his eyes welling with tears. "I hope whoever has done this is happy, because it's making a lot of people distressed - the kind of distress they couldn't even imagine."

The memorial marks the nearby spot where Krystal's brutalized body was found the morning after she disappeared from a Stateline apartment complex March 19, 2000.

Thomas Robert Soria Sr., and his son Thomas Robert Soria Jr., were charged in the crime. Soria Jr., 21, pleaded guilty and received a life sentence. He admitted tossing the South Lake Tahoe fourth-grader's violated body down the embankment. The then-19-year-old said his father had raped and murdered the girl. Soria Sr., 40, who claimed he was innocent, committed suicide one day into his death-penalty trial.

Threats of a lawsuit in September prompted NDOT officials to address the enormous tribute resting in the state-right-of-way 2 miles west of Carson City. An unnamed Reno man hired attorney Robert Angres and cited opposition to the cross because it is an establishment of religion; on the roadside without a permit; distracting to motorists; and its presence decreases the scenic value of the area.

Scott Magruder, NDOT spokesman, admits the department has no policy on roadside memorials and generally looks the other way when it comes to them - "But the sheer size of this memorial is the reason we're removing it."

Magruder said a "workshop" in January open to the public will help NDOT draft a policy on roadside memorials. If roadside memorials are allowed, a portion of the removed cross could be returned, he said.

For Krystal's family, the cross is not the issue.

"Our family is just like your family," Krystal's adult sister Sonya Klempner said Tuesday as she watched NDOT workers pour water on the smoking base of the dismantled cross still hot from cutting it from its concrete foundation. "I think this stood as a reminder that things like this do happen even in our small town. It was as big as it was because people kept destroying it."

Gary James, memorial caretaker, said he was sickened. "This is disgusting. I really feel helpless."

He spent the first part of the morning filling about eight trash bags with stuffed animals left by passersby at the base of the monument. After crews took the cross away, James unloaded the mementos and laid them on the remaining concrete pad.

"I hate it when someone tells me I can't do something," he said. "It only makes me try harder."

We should also remember Jaycee Lee Dugard who like Krystal Steadman was abducted in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.

The older predator responsible for Krystal's murder is strongly suspected of being responsible for Jaycee's unresolved disappearance. Jaycee was never found and we should remember Jaycee as well when we think of Krystal and her desecrated memorial!

Amazingly Jaycee Dugard survived her decade long captivity and testified against the monster, who kidnapped her!
