Summit County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert has asked that a grand jury be impaneled to investigate the death of Stephanie Roller, reported missing from her Silverthorne home on Nov. 23 and whose body was found in the Blue River on Nov. 26.

Summit County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert and Silverthorne Police Chief Mark Hanschmidt made the announcement in a joint news release that identified Dale Bruner, Roller's husband, "as the key suspect in the case."

Roller, a Silverthorne mother of three, was reported missing by Bruner.

Preliminary results from an autopsy show Roller, 41, died from a combination of blunt force trauma and drowning.

The results from the autopsy conducted on Nov. 29 prompted the Silverthorne police to classify Roller's death as a homicide.

Hurlbert said in an interview that he asked for the request for the grand jury to be sealed. He declined to talk about evidence or why Bruner has been labeled the "key suspect" in the case.

When contacted by The Denver Post, Dale Bruner was stunned when told he had been named the "key suspect."

"This is the first I've heard of it," said Bruner. "I do not have a comment."

Asked if he had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf, Bruner said, "That is not going to happen."

Roller, 41, was laid off on Oct. 13 from her job with Summit County, according to her family. She had worked for the Summit County government as an engineering technician and environmental planner for single-family residential construction.

On the same day she lost her job, she had a fight with her husband over the disciplining of their three children.

Roller had filed for divorce from Bruner on Nov. 1. An initial conference with a family court facilitator was scheduled for the day she was reported missing.

However, Roller asked the court to reschedule the conference to Nov. 30 because of "holiday travels," said court officials.

Hurlbert said that the couple's three children are being cared for by Stephanie Roller's family.

He added that it would take about six weeks to impanel the grand jury which could consider evidence for a period of up to 18 months.

Release Date: January 5, 2011

District Attorney Files Motion for Grand Jury in Stephanie Roller Bruner Homicide

A motion to impanel a grand jury in the Stephanie Roller Bruner homicide case has been filed with the District’s Chief Judge in Eagle County Court. After consultation with Silverthorne Police Chief Mark Hanschmidt, District Attorney Mark Hurlbert filed a motion on January 5, 2011, to impanel a grand jury for this case. “After working closely with Chief Hanschmidt and representatives of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to review what the investigation has brought forth to date, a collective decision was made that a grand jury would be the most prudent course of action,” stated Mark Hurlbert. The Stephanie Roller Bruner homicide investigation, being conducted by the Silverthorne Police Department with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, has identified Dale Bruner, Stephanie’s husband, as the key suspect in the case. “A great deal of investigative work has been done to date, leading us to move forward with the grand jury route. We continue to work closely with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the District Attorney’s Office on the details of this case,” stated Police Chief Mark Hanschmidt.

Stephanie Roller Bruner was reported as missing to the Silverthorne Police Department, by her husband Dale Bruner, on November 23. A body was located on November 26 by Summit County Search and Rescue, and the Summit County Coroner positively identified that body as that of Stephanie Roller Bruner. The body was located in the Blue River just outside of Silverthorne town limits in an area that was the focus of the search and rescue operation related to the missing person case. Preliminary results from an autopsy conducted on November 29 showed blunt force trauma and drowning as contributing factors in the death of Stephanie Roller Bruner. The preliminary autopsy information prompted the Silverthorne Police Department to transition the case from a death investigation to a homicide investigation. Final autopsy results are still pending.
